Diesel contains paraffin wax. That wax is normally dissolved in the fuel, but cold temperatures can cause it to form visible crystals.
The cloud point is the temperature at which wax crystals begin becoming visible in the fuel. It is an early warning that cold-flow performance is changing.
As temperatures continue to fall, wax crystals can combine and collect in the fuel filter. The engine may lose power, stall or fail to start because fuel cannot pass through the filter.
Diesel Cold Flow must be added while the fuel is still warm enough for the additive to mix properly. Pouring preventative anti-gel into a tank after wax has already formed is too late.
