Subaru owners pay close attention to oil viscosity, CVT fluid and differential service—and for good reason. Subaru uses different engines, transmissions and fluid requirements across its model years.
A normally aspirated FB-series engine does not automatically use the same engine oil recommendation as a turbocharged FA-series engine. A manual-transmission WRX does not use the same transmission lubricant as a Lineartronic CVT model. The BRZ also differs from most other Subaru vehicles in several drivetrain and maintenance details.

Many later Subaru applications specify a low-viscosity synthetic oil, while some older, turbocharged or performance applications have different requirements. The fact that two vehicles both have a horizontally opposed engine does not make their oil recommendations identical.
Confirm the oil level, leaks, service history and engine condition. Using a heavier oil without checking the manufacturer’s permitted viscosity range can create another problem instead of fixing the first.
Subaru has used multiple CVT designs and fluid requirements. Before using an aftermarket CVT fluid, confirm that the product manufacturer specifically recommends it for the exact vehicle application.
Do not assume that every fluid labelled “CVT” meets every Subaru requirement. Check the exact year, model and transmission application.

Subaru’s all-wheel-drive system depends on lubricated final-drive components. Differential oil protects gears and bearings under the sliding and rolling loads created as torque is delivered to the wheels.
The front differential arrangement depends on the transmission. In some applications the front differential is housed with the transmission assembly but uses a separate lubricant compartment. That makes correct drain-plug and fill-plug identification especially important.
A manual transmission requires more than an oil with the correct number on the label. The lubricant must also suit the gears, bearings and synchronizer materials used in that transmission.
A lubricant can provide strong gear protection and still be a poor match for synchronizer engagement. Use a product specifically recommended for the transmission rather than a random axle lubricant.
The Subaru BRZ uses a different drivetrain layout from Subaru’s mainstream all-wheel-drive vehicles. Do not transfer WRX, Crosstrek or Outback fluid advice directly to a BRZ.

Increased boost, tuning, track use, larger tires, towing and other modifications can increase lubricant temperature and load. A modified vehicle should not automatically follow advice written for a stock daily driver without considering how the vehicle is actually used.
