Subaru Engine Oil, CVT Fluid & Maintenance

Find the correct engine oil, CVT fluid, differential oil and maintenance information for Subaru vehicles. Start with the exact year, model, engine and transmission—because one recommendation does not fit every Outback, Forester, Crosstrek, WRX or Ascent.

Start With the Application

Subaru Fluid Selection Is Vehicle-Specific

Subaru owners pay close attention to oil viscosity, CVT fluid and differential service—and for good reason. Subaru uses different engines, transmissions and fluid requirements across its model years.

A normally aspirated FB-series engine does not automatically use the same engine oil recommendation as a turbocharged FA-series engine. A manual-transmission WRX does not use the same transmission lubricant as a Lineartronic CVT model. The BRZ also differs from most other Subaru vehicles in several drivetrain and maintenance details.

The safe approach is simple: identify the exact vehicle first, then match the lubricant to the specification and viscosity listed for that application. Do not select a fluid from bottle colour, internet habit or a recommendation written for a different model year.

Technician’s Rule Verify the year, model, engine and transmission before buying fluid.

“It fits a Subaru” is not enough information for an engine oil, transmission fluid or differential lubricant recommendation.

Subaru Fluid Categories

What Fluids Does a Subaru Need?

Most Subaru maintenance questions fall into four main lubricant categories. Each system does a different job and may require a completely different product.

1

Engine Oil

Protects the engine, turbocharger where equipped, timing components, bearings and other lubricated parts.

2

CVT Fluid

Provides the frictional, hydraulic and wear-control properties required by an applicable continuously variable transmission.

4

Manual Gear Oil

Used in applicable manual transmissions and transaxles. The required lubricant must suit the gears and synchronizers in that unit.

Use the Viscosity Listed for Your Exact Engine

Subaru has used several engine families, including EJ, FB and FA engines. Required viscosity, oil capacity and service information can change with the engine, model year, market and operating conditions.

Many later Subaru applications specify a low-viscosity synthetic oil, while some older, turbocharged or performance applications have different requirements. The fact that two vehicles both have a horizontally opposed engine does not make their oil recommendations identical.

Subaru Owners Should Check

  • The viscosity printed in the owner’s manual or oil-fill information.
  • The API and ILSAC performance requirements where applicable.
  • Whether the engine is naturally aspirated or turbocharged.
  • The correct oil capacity with filter replacement.
  • The oil level after filling and again after the engine has run.
Do not diagnose oil consumption by changing viscosity alone.

Confirm the oil level, leaks, service history and engine condition. Using a heavier oil without checking the manufacturer’s permitted viscosity range can create another problem instead of fixing the first.

Lineartronic CVT Service

Subaru CVT Fluid Is Not a Universal Fluid Decision

Subaru has used multiple CVT designs and fluid requirements. Before using an aftermarket CVT fluid, confirm that the product manufacturer specifically recommends it for the exact vehicle application.

Confirm Compatibility

Do not assume that every fluid labelled “CVT” meets every Subaru requirement. Check the exact year, model and transmission application.

Use the Correct Procedure

Many CVTs require a controlled fluid-temperature range and a specific level-check procedure. Overfilling or underfilling can affect operation.

Do Not Guess the Level

Measure what was drained when appropriate, follow service information and confirm the final fluid level using the specified procedure.

Canadian maintenance schedules matter.

Subaru Canada’s current maintenance guide recommends replacement of CVT fluid on applicable non-BRZ models at 110,000 km or 66 months. Older model-year schedules and other markets may list different inspection or replacement intervals. Use the schedule issued for the exact vehicle.

Subaru AWD Drivetrain

Front and Rear Differential Oil

Subaru’s all-wheel-drive system depends on lubricated final-drive components. Differential oil protects gears and bearings under the sliding and rolling loads created as torque is delivered to the wheels.

The front differential arrangement depends on the transmission. In some applications the front differential is housed with the transmission assembly but uses a separate lubricant compartment. That makes correct drain-plug and fill-plug identification especially important.

Common Service Mistakes

  • Draining the wrong compartment.
  • Removing a drain plug before confirming the fill plug can be opened.
  • Using the CVT fill opening for differential oil or the reverse.
  • Installing the wrong gear-oil viscosity.
  • Assuming front and rear capacities are identical.
  • Failing to replace sealing washers where required.
Manual Subaru Models

Manual Transmission and Transaxle Lubricants

A manual transmission requires more than an oil with the correct number on the label. The lubricant must also suit the gears, bearings and synchronizer materials used in that transmission.

Shift Quality Matters

A lubricant can provide strong gear protection and still be a poor match for synchronizer engagement. Use a product specifically recommended for the transmission rather than a random axle lubricant.

BRZ Is Its Own Application

The Subaru BRZ uses a different drivetrain layout from Subaru’s mainstream all-wheel-drive vehicles. Do not transfer WRX, Crosstrek or Outback fluid advice directly to a BRZ.

Maintenance Is More Than an Engine Oil Change

Engine oil gets most of the attention, but the CVT, manual transmission and differentials also depend on clean, correct lubricant.

Service Area What Must Be Confirmed Why It Matters
Engine oil Viscosity, specification, capacity and interval. Protects bearings, timing components, pistons and turbocharger where equipped.
CVT fluid Exact transmission application, fluid compatibility and level procedure. Supports hydraulic control, friction performance, cooling and wear protection.
Front differential Correct compartment, gear-oil requirement, capacity and plug location. Protects the front final-drive gears and bearings.
Rear differential Required viscosity, capacity, drain/fill plugs and service interval. Protects the rear final-drive gears and bearings.
Manual transmission Gear protection and synchronizer-compatible recommendation. Affects wear protection, cold shifting and synchronizer operation.
Oil level checks Correct measuring procedure, vehicle position and fluid temperature. Prevents operation with too much or too little lubricant.
Modified Subaru vehicles need additional judgment.

Increased boost, tuning, track use, larger tires, towing and other modifications can increase lubricant temperature and load. A modified vehicle should not automatically follow advice written for a stock daily driver without considering how the vehicle is actually used.
